Since its introduction into the market by Pfizer in 1991, Zoloft has rapidly become one of the world’s most widely prescribed drugs for anti-depression. The numbers for Zoloft, 29,652,000 prescriptions filled out in 2007 alone, speak for themselves. Zoloft affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms thereby virtually eliminating these symptoms. However, it was recently reported that it causes birth defects, like craniosynostosis, among newborns of pregnant women taking this drug.
In many reported cases Zoloft has been helping people with their battle with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and anxiety disorders. As one patient of Zoloft states, “I've been on Zoloft 50mg for over two years. I am a more relaxed and easy-going person because of Zoloft. Prior to starting the medicine, I was anxious all the time, worried constantly about everything, and suffered periods of depression and hopelessness.”

There are other users however, who claim that side effects of Zoloft use have become apparent and need to stop usage or lower their current dosage. It is advised to visit your doctor as soon as possible if you are occurring any of the following side effects: very stiff (rigid) muscles, high fever, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, hallucinations, fainting, seizure, or shallow breathing.

You must also be careful of another common side effect of Zoloft, suicidal tendencies. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently required all anti-depressants must carry a black box warning stating that these drugs may increase the risk of suicide for persons under the age of 25. This warning is now mandatory because of two independent groups of FDA experts have reported of an increase in suicidal tendencies and behavior in children and adolescents, and another increase of suicidal behavior in the 18–24 age groups.

For the most part Zoloft has been reported to be doing the job that it has been intended to do. However, just like any drug there are those who have been feeling the adverse side effects of the drug since starting their prescription. For those who have been injured or harmed by the use of Zoloft knowing your legal options could be the next possible step. For more information on your legal options are visit with Zoloft Lawyer as soon as possible, many will give you a free consultation and most will not even charge you unless your case sees compensation in a court of law.
