Information on Mania and Hypomania

Mania

Mania is considered as a symptom in bipolar disorder. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it is defined as “excitement manifested by mental and physical hyperactivity, disorganization of mood, and elevation of mood”.  People with manic episodes usually experience or exhibit the following:

•             Elevated mood such as excessive happiness or excitement

•             Restlessness or hyperactivity

•             Easily gets irritated or angry

•             Racing thoughts

•             Excessive speech

•             Less need for sleep

•             Delusions or hallucinations such as delusions of grandeur

Hypomania

Hypomania literally means “below mania”. In hypomania, the individual usually has elevated mood and may appear to be more active than usual. However, people suffering from hypomania don’t have severe delusions or illusions. This symptom is the less severe manifestation of manic episodes of people with bipolar disorder. A number of these symptoms are true in people with hypomania.

•             Increased self-esteem

•             Makes too much plans

•             Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities

•             More sensitive than usual

•             Increased goal-directed activities

•             Increased sexual flirting

•             Wishing to do a lot of things all at once

Hypomania is technically harmless unless people suffering from them make bad choices which would result to harm or injury. Most of the time, people with mania or hypomania stop taking their medications because these episodes make them feel good.

Zoloft Precaution for Mania and/or Hypomania

As per the approved FDA labelling of Zoloft, people with mania or hypomania are advised to be careful in taking the medication as it can aggravate these conditions. During the premarketing testing, 0.4% of patients treated with Zoloft had mania or hypomania. With these findings, doctors are then encouraged not to give the medication to people with bipolar disorder as it can worsen the condition. The makers of Zoloft as well as the FDA has placed warnings, precautions and other necessary information on the drug label so the medication can be used properly. This could also protect the company from potential Zoloft lawsuits that would be raised by other drug users.
